Liu Xiang Injuries forced him to retire from monday’s Heats

Filed Under (Sports) by nicson on 18-08-2008

BEIJING (AFP) - - China’s defending Olympic 110 metres hurdles champion Liu Xiang sensationally retired from the event without competing in his first round heat here on Monday because of injury.

The 25-year-old former world record holder did get down into the blocks for the heat but once it had been called for a false start he ripped off his lane numbers attached to his thighs, turned round and back into the depths of the stadium.

The 90,000 crowd, most of whom had packed in to see the country’s most adored sportsman, were stunned when Liu’s retirement was announced by the stadium announcer.

Maybe the stress has been too high and his injuries are getting worse. I hope Liu Xiang can recover fast from his injuries.
